Gain some cultural knowledge
I think it’s best for [university staff involved in sexual assault response] to understand that because of where we come from, something like this- if they were to ask, "oh, why didn’t you report it?’’ Or like, "why did you let that happen?’’ I think it’s important for them to gain some cultural knowledge and understanding about where we come from, so they can understand why are you approaching the situation like this. I think it’s also important to gain cultural education about that person, so you could offer to help them and understand them.
Recommendations

Engage in activities to develop cultural responsiveness as it pertains to sexual violence prevention and response. Apply culturally responsive practices in these areas.

Use approaches that are trauma informed and survivor-centred.

Ensure all sexual violence prevention and response education and training opportunities actively deconstruct victim-blaming, rape myths and gender norms. Ensure these sessions take an intersectional approach to understanding sexual violence and supporting victim/survivors.

Emphasize the victim's right to decide whether they would like to report the incident after they have disclosed it to the university. Ensure the victim is aware of the formal and informal routes for reporting, including the option of reporting to the police. Clearly communicate any limits to confidentiality.
