Always listen and understand what is consent
You shouldn’t blame the victim. You shouldn’t say, for example, "Oh, you were too drunk," or, "You were dressing inappropriately." You should always listen and understand what is consent. Never try to manipulate the whole situation to make the person feel even worse for something that they didn’t have control over.
Recommendations
-
Use approaches that are trauma informed and survivor-centred.
-
Create and promote avenues for comprehensive consent education.
-
Ensure all sexual violence prevention and response education and training opportunities actively deconstruct victim-blaming, rape myths and gender norms. Ensure these sessions take an intersectional approach to understanding sexual violence and supporting victim/survivors.
