Asian Female

Our culture is very conservative

So my point is that our culture is very conservative. Like, Asia, or Asians, are very conservative. The society as a whole is conservative, therefore, the people are very conservative. [...] Not a lot of people would be open to talk about a sexual topic. We think that it’s a personal topic that we should deal with ourselves, only. So my offer of advice [to people supporting an East Asian survivor] would be to try to be as respectful as possible. Don’t force them to talk about that because not a lot of people will be available for that. Instead, discuss about the feelings - like, how are you feeling about the situation?

Recommendations

  • Use open-ended questions and collaborative communication when supporting a victim/survivor.

  • Engage in activities to develop cultural responsiveness as it pertains to sexual violence prevention and response. Apply culturally responsive practices in these areas.

  • Consider how a student's identities might affect their expectations and concerns when accessing supports following a sexual assault, or when involved in a sexual assault investigation.
