Avoiding approaches that are “too much”

Don't overhelm students with policy materials. Plan an approach to increasing policy awareness that provides essential information and resources at dedicated times and locations. Consider potential triggers when developing and implementing educational/awareness materials.

On the one hand, we are emphasizing the importance of making more information about university SV/SA policies more available. At the same time, we heard that too much information, or the wrong kind of information, presented in the wrong place, can be upsetting to students. Some students expressed that information about sexual assualt presented while they were trying to socialize with new friends created discomfort. Participants also reported feeling uncomfortable with educational materials that represent sexual violence or even intimacy too closely. Such perspectives should be taken into account as part of a culturally responsive approach to sexual violence prevention and response.
