But within what timeframe?

You say all these things: "It will be investigated", "We will report to you, etc.," but within what timeframe? Otherwise, it can drag on for six months. I've heard numerous stories about people graduating and moving out of the system, and it was never resolved because someone has appealed it throughout, or what have you. So there should be timelines that people can expect.

Recommendations

  • Use approaches that are trauma informed and survivor-centred.

  • Emphasize the victim's right to decide whether they would like to report the incident after they have disclosed it to the university. Ensure the victim is aware of the formal and informal routes for reporting, including the option of reporting to the police. Clearly communicate any limits to confidentiality.
