Sexual assault happens as if it’s not an issue at all

Especially the place I am from- there is very limited exposure to sexual harassment and polices of this sort. Sexual assault happens as if it's not an issue at all. It's so common.[...] The sexual policy that we have at SMU - it mentions that not having consent in a relationship is sexual assault. In many parts of India, such things are not happening. I mean, to be precise, the marital rape stuff is so common there that they are not in state to understand it. Some of the older people might not be able to understand it.

Recommendations

  • Engage in activities to develop cultural responsiveness as it pertains to sexual violence prevention and response. Apply culturally responsive practices in these areas.

  • Consider how a student's identities might affect their expectations and concerns when accessing supports following a sexual assault, or when involved in a sexual assault investigation.

  • Deliver accessible education about Canadian sexual assault laws, including how they work, and the ways they tend to fail survivors in practice.

  • Create and promote avenues for comprehensive consent education.
