Sexual violence causes a lot of suicides and depression

Especially in my culture, the country I come from, anything that relates to, like, a very intensive sexual violence causes a lot of suicides and depression, right? So my other concern [in supporting a survivor] would be to prevent her from taking any such actions. [...] I [won't] disclose any names, [but] that has actually happened to a friend of mine; and I had to, like, stay with the person for like eight or nine days, so that he does not commit anything that would be of harm.

Recommendations

  • Sign on with a service such as KeepMe.Safe, which connects students with mental health professionals from cultures around the world and promote this service as part of university SV/SA service provision.

  • Promote SANE nurses as supporters for victims/survivors. Ideally, this would happen in the context of a formal partnership with SANE nurses, which includes 24/7 availability of SANE nurse services on campus.

  • Use approaches that are trauma informed and survivor-centred.
