Some people don’t know the struggle of certain cultures

I think being educated about it is important for people that can protect you, like psychologists and more, because they’re educated and they know the fears and they know how to reassure you. Because a lot of people who have been sexually assaulted are really scared because even when they’re talking about their fears, some people wouldn’t get it because they just don’t know the struggle of certain cultures, so I think reassurance is a big one.

Recommendations

  • Promote SANE nurses as supporters for victims/survivors. Ideally, this would happen in the context of a formal partnership with SANE nurses, which includes 24/7 availability of SANE nurse services on campus.

  • Use approaches that are trauma informed and survivor-centred.

  • Consider how a student's identities might affect their expectations and concerns when accessing supports following a sexual assault, or when involved in a sexual assault investigation.
