There is a little bit of a gender bias
I feel like there is a little bit of a gender bias, because, well, especially in the Caribbean, males are less likely to report sexual violence than females. I feel like because of that, you are not gonna have as many males coming forward as you would females. And I don’t really think it’s the policy's fault or it can’t really fault the policy. But like, it's still - it's not inviting to males because they don’t want to be embarrassed. They must know it's okay; like, it happened, and they can also report and talk about their struggle as well.
Recommendations
-
Including male students across cultures in discussions of sexual violence, gender stereotypes, and stereotypes of masculinity.
-
Ensure all sexual violence prevention and response education and training opportunities actively deconstruct victim-blaming, rape myths and gender norms. Ensure these sessions take an intersectional approach to understanding sexual violence and supporting victim/survivors.
-
In education and awareness campaigns, highlight the fact that a significant percentage of men have experienced sexual violence in their lives.
