Good listener, supportive, problem-solving

[If a friend discloses to you], I think for sure you need to be a good listener. You need to listen to all the person has to say. You also need to be a good problem solver so that you can help your friend or the person to solve the problem in the best way possible. I think in the initial stage, we need to listen more rather than give advice or giving our opinion on the matter. So, I think being a good listener and being a supportive person and having good problem-solving skills are the qualities to have to get through a situation like this.

Recommendations

  • Use open-ended questions and collaborative communication when supporting a victim/survivor.

  • Present learning materials in a way that is helpful to a friend supporting a victim/survivor.

  • Make supports available to members of the university community who receive disclosures, or raise awareness of these supports within university communities where they already exist.
