We need to create an atmosphere of trust

[To support a survivor], we need to create an atmosphere of trust. Show her that you really care for her and that you understand what she is experiencing right now- you are understanding all the suffering she has undergone. The person providing support needs to remain calm cause' the incident has to be handled very carefully. We also need to know how to handle their emotions, 'cause, at this point, emotions would play a very big role. The person who is giving advice needs to know all of this to make her feel better.

Recommendations

  • Use approaches that are trauma informed and survivor-centred.

  • Present learning materials in a way that is helpful to a friend supporting a victim/survivor.

  • Make supports available to members of the university community who receive disclosures, or raise awareness of these supports within university communities where they already exist.
