Middle Eastern Male

Approach them from the heart

If it's someone you care about, someone you know, you should approach them the same way: from the heart. You should just care about them and try to be there for them, because that’s all you can do as a support system. If you are going to judge, or if you are going to label them based on their gender, then you are adding to the problem rather than trying to help your friend find the solution.

Recommendations

  • Use approaches that are trauma informed and survivor-centred.

  • Present learning materials in a way that is helpful to a friend supporting a victim/survivor.

  • Ensure all sexual violence prevention and response education and training opportunities actively deconstruct victim-blaming, rape myths and gender norms. Ensure these sessions take an intersectional approach to understanding sexual violence and supporting victim/survivors.
